Social media use have positive and negative effects. Some of the positive effects of
social media are: they serve as a media platform and enable users to diffuse news quickly
and conveniently. It also offers low cost advertisement. Social networking sites enable
users to connect to their long lost acquaintances, friends, or even family. They enable
people to connect to a person no matter the distance is. They give their users the ability to
announce news to a big group of people without pulling a lot of effort. Social media can be
used by college students to raise awareness about social problems that they are concern
about. It can be use to help meet people that shares the same interest as they are. It can also
be utilize to send mass messages easily. On the other hand, social media also bring
drawbacks. Some of the negative effects of it are degrading the interpersonal skills of
their excessive users, deprive relationship opportunities, distraction, less productivity, and
contributes to lack of self-esteem and self-confidence. It let its users to be defined by
numbers of likes, follows, and friends. It makes its users become dependent on them and
become dependent on the attention of other people. Excessive use of social media makes
other people live a life that is not real: a life that is dictated by the society’s standards and
not on one’s own. Addictive use of social media on college students may or may not have
a good effect on the student itself, it all depends on how a person balances his or her life.
