Social Constructs and Pressures
The film “Codes of Gender” aims to help audiences understand how media displays of
men and women affect gender roles and societal expectations. Much like many other social
issues I see a clear double standard in that it is considered okay for women to express who they
are through high fashion while men may be considered homosexual for doing so. Sut Jhally, the
director and writer of the film, did an incredible job analyzing the ritualization of subordination,
commercial realism, and licensed withdrawal in the media.
