Computer crime also known as cyber crime, is one of the fastest growing types of
illegal activity not only in the United States but all over the world. In today’s modern
world, we look at the internet cyber space as a convenient way of entertainment such as
TV, news, games, social networking and so much more. But what we don’t realize is, it
also opens the doors to all the criminals looking to take advantage of us, innocent
everyday people who surf the web. The statistics for cyber crime are hard to believe.
Almost 73% of Americans have come across some form of computer crime or attempted
crime on the web. Many times, victims are unaware of ever knowing anything illegal had
taken place.
Regardless of the risks, there are things you can do to help protect yourself from
becoming one of the many cyber crime statistics and also to prevent yourself from being
a victim of the cyber criminals. There are many different types of computer crime.
Phishing, a popular act of cyber crime is the act of sending fraudulent emails to trick the
recipient. There main motive being, to receive money in any way. This crime usually
most of the time aim for the elderly who fall for the fraudulent emails. Hacking, is
similar to what they call “digital trespassing” going past what is allowed or going past
what you have permission to. Hacking is most of the time done when credit card
numbers are shared on the internet as the cyber criminals use the number to scan your
card till your very last penny. And other times hacking is used to retrieve important
information that is shared on the internet to access important accounts and others. Lastly
there is stalking and harassment.
Not all types of cyber crime include money. Some cyber criminals use the

internet as a mask for other illegal behaviors like stalking or harassing a person. With all
of this, comes cyber security. In this modern world that we live in, we may not realize it
but almost all aspects of our life depend on the internet and computers. One being
communication as communicating with either your boss, co worker, son, or daughter is
very important, email, cell phones, and texting are all just as important. Another being
transportation. Traffic control signals need the internet for the signals to be sent out for
traffic to flow smoothly. Without it, the roads would be a dangerous place as accidents
would eventually build up on the roads. Aside from traffic control signals, car engine
systems, and airplane navigations play the same role of importance also. Government
especially share the importance of internet and computer as they possess important
confidential information such as birth certificate and death records, social security,
licensing, and tax records just as financially our bank accounts, loans, and electronic pay
checks are all important factors in our life that need computers to process.. In conclusion
one may now easily see how much importance internet and computers have in this
modern day world that we live in. Considering how much personal information is
stored either on our own computer, someone else’s or even our bank or hospital, how is
that data kept secure? That’s where cyber security comes into the picture. Cyber security
protects the information and systems that we rely on everyday of our lives whether at
home work, or school.
Cyber Security also known as information technology security focuses on
protecting computers, networks, programs and data and more importantly prevents
unauthorized access and hackers from intruding. There are three major principles of
cyber security known as CIA not referring to the Central Intelligence Agency but to

confidentiality, integrity and lastly availability. CIA is a standard evaluation of
information systems security mainly focusing on the goals of confidentiality integrity and
availability. Any time an information technology team installs a software application,
computer server, analyzes a data transport method, creates a database or even provides
access to information or data sets, the CIA principle must be taken in consideration.
Breaking down CIA into its 3 major principles, The C in CIA stands for
Confidentiality which deals with information that is sensitive or confidential and must
stay the same and also shared with only authorized people. For example your confidential
medical records should be released only to those people or organizations such as
doctors, hospitals, insurance, government agency and yourself who are authorized to see
