Dear Mohamed,
I am writing you this letter because of your sleep, or rather your lack of sleep. You might not
know this, but your lack of sleep can have some serious consequences such as less memory
retention, worse attention, it can change your DNA, and your overall health would be worse. By
fixing your bad sleep habits the opposite can occur with better memory retention, better
attention, and your overall health would improve.
I heard that you are having trouble remembering information that you learned from class. There
are several reasons as to why that might be. One of those reasons could be sleep deprivation. We
learn from the Ted Talk, Sleep is your superpower- Matt Walker, that you in fact need sleep
before and after learning occurs. Sleep after learning helps move information from your short-
term memory to long-term memories. Lack of sleep hinders that process from occurring. Matt
Walker also talks about the importance of sleep before learning. “Sleep before learning actually
prepares your brain almost like a dry sponge”, (Walker).
I know you barely get any sleep because of the number of classes you are taking but did you
know that could actually harm you in the long run. You hear it a lot, “you‘re young what do you
need sleep for”, but that is exactly why you should sleep. Sleep deprivation can actually lead you
to age faster. Studies have shown that lack of sleep can age a man by ten years. Men that sleep
only 5 hours compared to men that sleep a full eight hours on average have smaller testicles and
less testosterone, (Walker). This is only the start of your problems if you continue to be sleep-
