newspapers really showed the public how divided the parties were. Abraham Lincoln united the
divided Republican Party with his ideas. The candidates of the 1860 Democratic Party had very
different ideas. The candidates of the 2016 Democratic Party also had very different ideas when
it came to certain issues. After Abraham Lincoln was elected the South was furious. The South
did not want a leader that did not support slavery. Slavery was a very big system that the South
needed. The slaves were the base of the South’s entire economy. The South separated from the
United States. They became to be known as the confederates.
