Slavery Change Throughout a Century
Between the 1670s and the end of the 1760s, there was a huge shift in slavery. A racial
divide began to be apparant. There were also differences in severity depending on location and
task required of the slave. Differences existed between slaves of the tobacco colonies, the sugar
colonies, and South Carolina due to the nature of the work as well as the slave-holder’s opinions
of the slaves. For example, slaves in South Carolina had relatively longer lives due to the fact
their masters treated them better and tobacco cultivation was physically undemanding labor.
