ZAHYDEE MACHADO: Hello. My name is Zahydee Machado, and I'll be discussing single-payer as a
solution to our health care crisis. When someone is sick, especially seriously so, they're already worrying
about things like, will they be able to work, take care of their loved ones, can they survive their illness?
Tacking on to this the worry about paying for necessary and potentially life-saving treatment is not
something we wish on anyone close to us.
I believe this is an issue that impacts us all. And if it hasn't, it's something that could impact you in the
future, which is why I've researched a lot of the causes behind it and possible solutions. Now the federal
government should reform our current system to a single-payer model, like the one proposed in the
Medicare For All Act because our current segmented payer model is inefficient, costly, and inaccessible
to many.
Let's examine some of the biggest issues with this from a cost and quality perspective, the history that has
led us to this point and why the single-payer model could be the best path forward. Now our current
health care leaves a lot of people uninsured or underinsured or at risk of financial repercussions. Yet, why
is this? When data, as the one shown by Dr. Chris Pope in the website for the Manhattan Institute in 2019,
shows that health care spending in the US is almost double that of other countries as a percentage of their
respective GDPs. This might be strange because one of the reasons we believe we hold our current system
