The argument regarding repealing the amendment to the Nevada State Constitution that
sets term limits for elected officials has very strong supportive and opposing sides. In this issue
paper, the history of this amendment will be explored, and both sides of the argument examined
and contemplated. The exact wording on the ballot in the 1996 was, “Shall the Nevada
Constitution be amended to establish term limits for state and local public officers in the
executive and legislative branches of government?” (Ballotpedia) At the conclusion of this
exploration, it will be clear that term limits are not only an effective, but a necessary piece of
legislation to keep the American government in check.
In order to better understand the nature of this amendment, we must look into the context
in which it was being proposed and what was going on during that time period to encourage an
amendment to the Nevada State Constitution. According to Michael J. Stewart,
