Should the United States Continue to Act as a Policeman for Other Countries?
The police are the internal regulation and control of a political unit, through managing
and exercising governmental powers with respect to safety, health, morals, comfort, and
prosperity. They are trained to prevent crime, law enforcement, and authorized to maintain peace
and safety to the community or country. So, imagine a country with no police, no one to protect
you, no laws or regulations? That would be crazy, the people are not going to feel protected nor
safe in their own countries and homes. There are several countries or section of countries where
the outlaws are dominated like North Korea, Somalia, the tribal area along the Afghan border in
Pakistan, Libya and Iraq. Also, Iran is one of the countries that threatens their neighbors with
violence (Reed, 2015). Now imagine the world with no police, no protection, no laws or
regulations? Do we really want to live in a world with no policeman?
The United States is one of the most powerful countries in the world. It is dominating in
the world’s economic and political systems. It has one of the largest and strongest militaries
which makes it capable of global power projection, along with that, it gives its huge influence
worldwide. Some say that the geographic location of the United States plays a big role for its
dominance over other countries. The strategic position of it gives it some geographical
advantages, for example: getting benefits from abundant national resources, strong industrial
base, high worker productivity, also laying their control in the Atlantic and Pacific (Marsh,
2015). With all that being said, the United States is more than capable in dominating in the world
over all other countries. But being capable of doing something, does not mean it is the right thing
to do.

So how did the United States gain its powers in the world? Let us go back to the World
War I. During the war, the United States was an isolated nation who involved itself into worlds
incidents and began to rise until they reached the economic and military power they are today.
They stayed out of the war that has had been going on for three years in Europe, until President
Woodrow Wilson decided to take them to war after few months of winning an election. He saw
that it was important for them to enter the war to make the world safe for democracy.
Wilson sent over two hundred men to Europe, knowing that some of these men might not
return. This war has marked the old order in Europe, and the beginning of what has been called
the “American Century” (Shmoop, 2008). By that time, the United States was not ready for war,
their army and navy did not match those of other countries in the war. During the war, Germany
used submarines to sink neutral ships including Lusitania which caused the death of almost
1,000 people, 128 of them are Americans. The United States then, partnered with its allies, and
president Wilson quickly developed a goal of freedom and democracy and told the people in the
United States to fight for these goals.
American soldiers fought bravely in the war, they did anything to protect their country.
With almost one million troops in the line by the end of the war, the presence of the United
States finally convinced the Germans that they could not win the war. In November 1918, an
armistice was signed declaring the end of the war (Shmoop, 2008). This war was a turning point
economically to the United States. While the war was going on in Europe, the manufactures in
the United States grew, and the American industry began to lead the world, the capital of the
international financial system was set up in New York, and the war gave the United States a

leading role in economic and military affairs (Shmoop, 2008). In this war, the United States
proved itself to all other countries of what it is capable of doing.
World War II had a huge impact on the United States as well. This war in known by the
bloodiest and largest war in world’s history. During that time, President Roosevelt spoke to the
country about the challenges that are coming ahead of them. He said, “There is one front and one
battle,” the president declared, “where everyone in the United States every man, woman, and
child is in action, and will be privileged to remain in action throughout this war. That front is
right here at home, in our daily lives, and in our daily tasks.” (Shmoop, 2008). The president in
that time knew that this war was going to be a tough one, so he spoke to his country and to his
