The Western and Eastern Roman Empires
After the split of the Roman Empire, both the Western and Eastern Empires experienced
differing social and economic customs as well as displayed cultures that were much different to
each other. The main difference between the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire and the Western
(Roman) Empire was its cultures. The Eastern Empire had a predominantly Greek culture in the
territory. Both architecture and art reflected Greek taste and technique. Greek was even the
official language of the Eastern Empire; unlike the West where Latin was the official language.
