What are sex crimes? When thinking about this topic, the first thing that comes to mind is an
action performed through coercion involving sexual behavior. Defined by dictionary.com, sex
crimes are, an illegal sexual act, activity, or behavior. The book, Criminal Law, says that, Sexual
relations (non-marital) become a crime in the United States if There is a lack of consent, They are
with a minor incapable of legally consenting, They are with a mentally deficient person or an
adult otherwise deemed by the law to be incapable of consenting, They are performed in public,
They are performed for profit (prostitution), They are between a therapist and a patient and in
violation of the laws of that state=( (Gardner & Anderson, 2018). There are many kinds of sex
crimes, but only three will be mentioned throughout this presentation. These crimes are 1. sex
trafficking, 2. rape, and 3. child pornography.
Human trafficking has played a huge role throughout the entire world. When the term
human trafficking is brought up, it creates an uneasy feeling upon society. The question is, what
exactly is human trafficking? Many people define this term as the modern day slavery. The
definition from gozoe.org says, “It is the “recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or
receipt of a person, by means of the threat of use of force or other forms of coercion, of
abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of
the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having
control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.” Exploitation includes sexual
exploitation, forced labor or services, servitude, or the removal of organs.” Like this definition
states human trafficking can happen in many different ways and among those, sex trafficking is
one of the most common. Sex t0rafficking is a form of sexual exploitation. It uses coercion to
obtain a sexual act. It starts with someone using fraudulent acts, abuse of power, threats, or
force to lure in their victims. Victims can be any person but it mainly tends to be women and
children. “…victims of human trafficking can be divided into three populations: Children under
the age of 18 induced into commercial sex, Adults (age 18 or over) induced into commercial sex
through force, fraud, or coercion, Children and adults induced to perform labor or services
through force, fraud, or coercion”(humantraffickinghotline.org). The victims, also known as
survivors, that experience sex trafficking often end up with many psychological and physical
disorders. The psychological disorders include, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, or

depression and these can lead into issues with substances, alcoholism, and many others.
Physical disorders can cause issues with pain and basic bodily functions.
The United States is a tier one on the matter of sex trafficking. This means that the country
is fully aware of the situation happening in our country and is doing everything it can to prevent
and fully end sex trafficking. The statistics from the U.S. Department of State says that there are
nearly 25 million people that are being denied their fundamental right to freedom in 2020.
Every day there are thousands of young girls being sent out in the streets of the U.S. to make
money for those who are in control of them, there are girls being abused because they are not
making the status quo, and there are girls being sold from one pimp to another. This is all
happening on the streets of our home country.
One of the most recent and notorious predator in the United States goes by the name of
Jeffery Epstein. Jeffery Epstein was a predator that knew exactly what he was doing and how to
manipulate young girls. Epstein allegedly trafficked girls 14 and older in his multiple homes.
There is no exact number of the victims involved in Epstein’s crime, but the number is large.
