The video I choose to watch was an English Settlement. The main speaker in this video was Professor
Miller. In this video, he describes the first English settlement to the beginning of slavery when there were no more
indentured servants. I think the Professor when into detail throughout the video, and put emphasizes on things
that needed it. The professor summed up decades of information in one video but did it so well!
They started the video in a small group describing how everyone was in the same colony but they were
still so very different, which I thought was interesting because it was true. The Indians were nothing like the
Englishmen, they knew how to live in the conditions they were in unlike the Englishmen who had no clue and is
why almost all the Englishmen died off so quickly. I think Professor Miller did a great job of explaining the different
leaders of the Indians and the Englishmen like Powhatan and John Rolfe. I think it was interesting when he said
that America was first approached as a business proposition because I had never looked at it before but I can see
why people would say that because most people were just after our land.
Professor went on to explain how the Indians and English relationships went back and forth overtime and
there were a couple attacks on each other. Most everything was resolved when John Smith married Pocahontas.
Once Pocahontas and her father died, things resorted back to killings.
The major crop for the English was tobacco. Once they discovered the market and high demand, they
stopped searching for gold and put everything in to that. English though had many lazy men and that is when
indentured servants came about where people would work for their freedom. Later on there were newfound
colonies of puritans and separatist. Separatist were called Pilgrims after sailing on the Mayflower.
Overall, I think this video gave us some great out looks on our history and helped us understand how
slavery developed and cleared the understanding between slaves and indentured servants.
