The setting and the themes of short stories play an important role when it comes to shaping
the story. The setting is where the story takes place and the theme of a story is the main
idea. In the short stories “The Chrysanthemums” and “The Story of An Hour” the literary
element setting is the backbone of the story. The theme also ties in with setting to make the
story have a deeper meaning.
In “The Chrysanthemums” he wife did nothing all day but stay on the ranch and garden,
her husband was also on the ranch but not in the same area, so she didn’t really see him.
She spent all if her days doing this for her life. This was her. This was Elisa Allen. She had
these unique Chrysanthemums that stood out to the Tuckerman’s eye. He decides to take
one with him. She thought that this would be how she got out into the world, through her
flowers. In this era women weren’t really allowed to go places without their husbands.
Elisa and her husband Henry go out later that night and she seed her flower on the side of
the road indicating she got nowhere. The setting was the early 1900s. The conflict was that
a woman was trying to be more than what she is and explore, and ends up seeing that she
made it nowhere. These two tie together because the women who wanted to explore
couldn’t because of the setting and the time period.
