Chapter 5 Serial Killers
• Paraphilia Profiling: examines the role of paraphilia in the etiology of sex crimes,
fantasy development, and the creation of sexual predators.
• Sex Offenders: only commit one crime, usually have only one victim, often prey on a
family member, tend to be non-progressive in sexually acting out, do not pose a threat
to the general community, are non-psychopathic and capable of forming healthy
emotional attachments, are non-paraphilic, and are amenable to treatment and control.
• Sexual Predators: multiple sex crimes, prey on multiple victims or multiple counts on a
victim over time, frequently have both stranger and/or familial victims, progressively
sexually exploitative, pose a threat to the general community, usually exhibit
psychopathic traits.

• Paraphilia:
o Preference for the use of a non-human object for sexual arousal.
o Repetitive sexual activity with humans that involves real or simulated suffering
or humiliation.
o Repetitive sexual activity with nonconsenting partners (rape).
o Involves sexual arousal through deviant or bizarre images or activities.
