1. The sentencing philosophies are retribution, restoration, incapacitation, rehabilitation, and
deterrence. Retribution-penalty imposed on someone as a reprisal for a criminal act. It is the
oldest method of penalty that has origins in the Judeo-Christian custom of justice. Retribution
averts offense by giving the offender or society a sense of gratification that a suspect has been
penalized, strengthening the belief that criminals’ justice system is working effectively. An
example of retribution is enacting fine and jail sentencing for a criminal with minor and major
offenses.
