Sentencing
As in every case it is important to look at all the circumstances of a case before passing
sentence. Hazing is a crime that is very serious and should be taken seriously by the judicial
system. According to the law hazing that results in serious body injury, as happened in this case,
results in a third-degree felony. Under the law this is punishable by community sanctions and
supervision up to five years in prison. Based upon the facts of this case along with what is known
about the defendant’s current home life, I would sentence Steve to community service and 2
years of probation in order to make sure that Steve understood the error of his ways. I would
order that his community service take place on the Sinclair campus talking to students about the
hazards of hazing.
