Sense of Self
Sense of self is how you judge the world, what way you use to treat people, and what you
believe. The importance of sense of self is your feelings about yourself. People are different from
one to another, so everyone has different experiences, thoughts and life. Teacher needs to lead
students to find the sense of self and make sure they treat themselves right.
Students’ sense of self can be influenced by many factors. “ Students often gain initial
insights about their general competence in a certain domain from their own successes and
failures in that domain” (Marsh, Gerlach, Tautwein, Ludtke& Brettschneider, 2007; Marsh &
O’Mara, 2008). Not only adults will feel the success and failure, but also many students do feel
them. Students’ grades, competitions in school’s events, and even small group projects can
influence their sense of self. They are easily feeling the success of their homework or tests. Also,
others’ behavior can influence students’ sense of self. “ For example, students who see
themselves achieving at higher levels than classmates are apt to develop a more positive sense of
self than those who consistently find themselves falling short” (R. Butler, 2008; Dijkstra,
Kuyper, can der Werf, Buunk, & van der Zee, 2008; Trautwein, Gerlach, & Ludtke, 2008). In the

end, community can also influence students’ sense of self. School’s groups such as clubs can
directly let the students feel they are the leader or follower. And even small group can let
