Selma
The march in Selma was a devastating but concurring event that led to the progress of the
Civil Rights Movements. The marches led to historic levels of perseverance for African
Americans across our country. Now looking at the present after these accomplishments, we
would hopefully never see such travesties ever again. Have we defeated the fight against
racial brutality? Some may say yes but the killings of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and
other African Americans in these past two years may have lead to alternative beliefs. Have
our workplaces in the United States rid the disgust of racism or are we just accepting the
minimum standard? What does our racism look like now?
When I was young I learned about Martin Luther King Jr. marching against racism in
Selma but I never did follow up research about the events that led to it. After research I
have come to believe that the movie Selma shows an accurate depiction of the marches of
Selma. However, Hollywood seems to have fabricated dramatic effect concerning the
relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson. The marches
accurately showed the brutality and egregious racism during the events but after research, I
learned that LBJ during that time was supportive of the Selma marches. A phone
conversation of the two men shows partnership and actually credits LBJ for the idea of the
Selma marches. The Hollywood depiction of LBJ is very cynical of a US president and in
this day and age more people will be watching this movie for information and
