Selena Quintanilla /Perez
Selena was a young, down to earth, and upbeat, as her songs, who quickly
became the Queen of Tejano (a modern urban version of Tex-Mex accordion-
based music called conjunto). She won many Tejano and Grammy music awards.
Selena was inducted into the “Latin Music Hall of Fame” in 1995. Her brilliant
career was cut short by a woman she trusted.
Selena was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas from a Mexican-
American family. She was the youngest in her family. Her mother is Marcela and
her father is Abraham Quintanilla. The family lived in “La Molina” a working class
town in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her family was close. Her father was a musician in
his younger years wanted to form a band with his kids to earn money for the
family. He discovered that Selena had a great voice and put her as the lead
singer. He taught her to sing in Spanish. As the family became more involved in
