In 2009, after a uniform policy was effectively implemented in the US, crime rates
dropped by 91%, children were less prone to suspension, and the suspension rate dropped
by a staggering 90% (Lalwani). What does this tell us about school uniforms? Despite
evidence suggesting uniforms are beneficial in different ways, many individuals still
choose to oppose them, primarily the students themselves. These students believe uniforms
are impractical, represent a form of dictatorship and reduce their liberty. Thus, this
argumentative case is directed towards those students who complain about school uniforms
in order to refute their claims and offer insightful supports for uniforms. The benefits of
uniforms are numerous; these include its cost effectiveness, reduction in bullying,
increased safety from outsiders, and an overall increased in the sense of school spirit and
belongingness.
Of the numerous advantages of uniforms, one of the most prevailing is of its cost
effectiveness. Although some students may argue that the purchase of uniforms is an
unnecessary waste of parental funds, thinking through a different perspective contradicts
this. Unlike other clothes, uniforms are commonly purchased once every few years and
typically last a long period of time. As the designs are set by the school, students do not
feel the urge to buy new designs according to changes and progresses in fashion. Parents
may save thousands of dollars each year from buying designer and fashionable clothes for
their children. As the parents save money, benefits may also arise for the students
themselves. Parents will be more willing and likely to splurge on other desired items for
