Information Technology is a broad department that includes every “aspect of the
institutional mission” (Lassner, 200, p. 1). The quality of the services and the infrastructure
of the IT can affect every individual within the institution. According to Lassner users
expect their computer and application to never crash and for someone to be there to fix it
in case of an issue occurring within a time limit. The IT structure contains numerous
expertise that rely on each other to function. According to some of the sources Lassner
uses in his article – Ryland (1989) “Today, the full spectrum of IT support involves a
number of diverse functional areas.” The most common function areas in IT contains;
communications (networking), security, developing, and help desk. The author also gives
an overview of the qualifications and roles of the IT staffing. “Each area requires staff with
specialized expertise in particular technologies, but some general activities cut across areas
of IT support” (Lassner 2000, p.3). In one of his sources,Lassners adds “Aside of the
general knowledge, customer service and the ability to adapt to rapid changes is also
required in the IT field” (Office of Technology Policy, 1999). The rapid changes are base
on the Internet time where all the products are usually replaced within 3 to 6 months. In
this case IT Managers need to work extremely hard just to stay within the same place.
