There have been new findings in the mental health field on how to better treat the
symptoms of schizophrenia. In the past, schizophrenia would often not be diagnosed till it
reached the late stages, which are much harder to reverse, and be treated by giving the patient
large doses of antipsychotic medication. This new government funded study found that keeping
the doses of medication as low as possible while receiving one on one talk therapy showed
greater improvement over the first two years of treatment than those that received the usual drug
focused therapy. The study also found that the sooner treatment was started after the first
psychotic episode the better they did.
