SAVING SOURDI
Reading the short story “Saving Sourdi” written by May-Lee Chai for the first time, it struck every
core of my being with a nostalgic feeling as if this story was written especially for me. As one of many
immigrants that come to this county chasing the American dream, I have gone through enough
hardship and discrimination to feel sympathy for our little Chinese girl and her family’s situation.
Saving Sourdi is not only a story about Nea, a girl who tries to cope with the changes of the people
around her as she goes through the transition into adulthood, but it also manifest the struggling life of
the American immigrants.
Even though the title is “Saving Sourdi”, the main protagonist of the story clearly is Nea. Nea has
every trait of a heroine; she is strong-willed, stubborn and possess a strong sense of justice. Nea
always believes she and Sourdi share an unbreakable bond, the one strong enough that nothing can tear
