Save the Last Dance, created and produced by MTV Films, directed by Thomas Carter in
the U.S in 2001, is a film which includes elements of drama, music, and romance. This
film shows the story between a white Midwestern girl and her new boyfriend, a black teen
from the South Side with a rough, semi-criminal past. The film focuses on youth and dance
enthusiasts. The main plot of this film is that Sara and Derek is a teen interracial couple in
Chicago, showing how to break down obstacles which hinder their dream and love. Played
by Julia Stiles, Sara who is deeply love with ballet is a high school student. She wants to
study at Juilliard School and become a successful dancer. Played by Sean Patrick Thomas,
Derek who is also a deeply in love with dance is the most popular student in school and he
is Sara’s boyfriend. Played by Fredro Starr, Malakai who is Derek’s best friend opposes the
relationship between Sara and Derek. Played by Terry Kinney, Roy who is Sara’s father
and is also a musician. He might be not a good father until his wife died and daughter live
with him, he realizes his fault and become a good father. Due to the difference in skin
color, this couple is not only having to cope with the paralyzed society but also need to
overcome the disagreement of their relationship from their friends. But in the end, they
conquered the barriers by the eagerness of dream and love. This movie shows the power of
