page-pf2
The San Marcos River at first looks to be a lovely natural resource, but when you
encounter signs along the river warning of health risks due to high bacteria counts reality sets in.
The proximity of human habitation and development to the river has created a breeding ground
for bacteria – the most dangerous being E coli. Water contamination, due to areas of
concentrated runoff, has created an unsafe environment for humans and wildlife. The purpose of
this project is to address the problem of water pollution in the San Marcos River and provide a
viable solution to the problem.
In evaluating one of the locations along the San Marcos River (see photo) attention was
drawn to a drainage area that was accidently being fed by leakage from a pond. Although the
leakage from the pond is no longer a problem, the water entering this area is highly contaminated
