Final Complete Argument
In the United States, 53% of Americans support gay adoption rights, 39% are against it
and 8% are unsure. 84% of homosexuals live together without children and 16% live together
with children. (Gay Adoption Statistics) I have a homosexual cousin; she and her mate were
discussing that they want to adopt children. They have been saying this for a while now, and it
has sparked a few arguments in my family because of their decision. My cousin wants to start a
family with her mate and she believes that her best option is to adopt children that have no
parents. That way both she and the children can benefit from the adoption. My family members
are telling them that they should not adopt a child and that they disapprove of their relationship.
My cousin is now going through the process of trying to adopt. Just think for a moment, how
would you feel if you see a homosexual couple trying to play the role of a mother and father to a
child? Do you think the child will turn out heterosexual or homosexual without the proper role of
a man and woman present?
My essay will prove that same-sex couples should not be able to adopt children. My
essay will also reveal why only a mother and father is best for children and by stopping
homosexuals from adopting will save the sacred relationship between men and women and their
children from being ruined. My paper will be divided into two large sections. The first section
will present arguments from the pro same-sex adoption side, which is homosexuals should be
able to adopt children, which I disagree with. The first argument I will disprove is that permitting
homosexuals from adopting is a form of discrimination. The second, and last, argument I will
disprove is that homosexual couples are just as effective at raising children as heterosexual
couples. The second section will explain the three main arguments to why same-sex couples
should not be able to adopt children, which you can see I agree with from my thesis. The first
argument is that parenthood is defined between a man and woman. The second argument is
homosexual parents will have an effect on the on the way children think psychologically. The
third, and last, argument is that homosexual relationships do not last as long as heterosexual
relationships.
The first argument from the pro same-sex adoption perspective is that permitting
homosexuals from adopting is a form of discrimination. THE WEEK is a weekly British
magazine that is also published in the United States. The magazine’s content includes viewpoints
of the week’s news and journalistic commentary from worldwide media to provide readers with
multiple political perspectives. The magazine brought up a good point in the article titled “Pros
and Cons of Gay Adoption.” The article says, “Barring gay men and lesbians from becoming
parents is discrimination, based on sexual orientation, which would not be acceptable in other
contexts such as employment” (par.4) This quote is comparing being fired from a job because
they are homosexual to not being able to adopt because they are homosexual. If it is wrong it one
state it should be wrong it the other.
I believe that the pro same-sex adoption position on same-sex adoption is incorrect. My
opponent is incorrect because they are comparing employment to adoption and that cannot be
classified as discrimination. The quote that they have provided commits the fallacy false analogy.
False analogy occurs when your opponent is trying to make a comparison. They are similar
because parenthood is considered by some as a job. Then again having a job and adoption is
totally different because you need a job to survive but you do not need a child to survive. They
are also different because if you do not like your job you always quit and find another one but, if
you do not like your child you cannot just quit being a parent and get another child. One gets a
job in order to be rewarded with money and one becomes a parent in order to take on the joy of
raising a child and seeing them grow. My reasons explain that my opponent’s view cannot be
taken seriously because the comparison between the two is different, making their view
incorrect.
The second argument from the pro same-sex adoption perspective is that homosexual
couples are just as effective at raising children as heterosexual couples. Think Progress is an
internet blog that sets out to change liberal ideas into policy through rapid response
communications. Zack Ford is the editor for Think Progress and is a graduate of Ithaca College
(B.M. Music Education) and Iowa State University (M.Ed. Higher Education). He has an article
named “New Study Confirms Same-Sex Couples Make Great Parents;” in this article Ford says,
Focusing specifically on children adopted at an early age, the study compared gay
and lesbian couples to straight couples who were all becoming parents for the first
