Response Paper: How the Other Half Lives
When I first started reading “How the Other Half Lives” by Jacob Riis I didn’t like
the book much, but as my reading progressed and I got an idea of how he was using his
writing to appeal to a certain type of audience, it actually became quite interesting. For
example at the beginning of the book I was somewhat offended about the way he
referred to the different immigrant ethnic groups. He used terms such as, “Italian
scavengers”, “niggers”, “fish heads” amongst others. Then I started to consider that at
the time the book was written it was more common for people to use that type of
language, and though it is not okay, many folk, especially wealthier folk referred to the
