POS Risk Assessment
The textbook discussed Point of Sale Systems (POS) in chapter 4. POS Systems are
usually used by organizations like grocery stores and department stores who do not extend credit
to their customers. Sales transactions are immediately exchanged for some form of payment such
as cash, check, or debit/credit cards at the point of sale. Also, inventory is usually kept on the
store’s shelves as opposed to a separate warehouse and the items that the customers choose to
purchase have Universal Product Codes (UPC) that are scanned. Once the UPC’s are scanned the
total charge for the item is auto-calculated in the system along with the date, terminal number,
and payment type amongst other details. Nevertheless, discrepancies can still occur with these
systems do to human error such as giving a customer improper change.
