Why in maybe the most literate and cultured country in Europe was Adolph Hitler able to
rise to power? What most people don’t realize when studying Germany during the World
War era, is that Germany was arguably the most literate and cultured nation in Europe. Yet
Hitler was able to rise to power under such circumstances.
At the time Germany was experiencing great economic turmoil. Unemployment was as
high as 30% and morale in the country was also very low.A great depression ravished
many of the world powers and Germany was not unscathed. German citizens became very
upset and angry with the current government and sought change. That change ended up
being extreme political parties like the Nazi’s. Germans were looking for a fix towards all
of their problems and were especially vulnerable. Thus, support for these parties was easier
to obtain. The Nazi party’s platform was not one of genocide and mass abuse of power or
even war, but it talked of Germany returning to its rightful place in Europe. The Treaty of
Versailles the treaty that was signed at the end of the First World War was a treaty that
most if not all Germans felt was unjust and unfair towards their country and rightfully
