One example of a rip off was through the Microsoft company. I purchased a surface book
computer for $2400 and two months later they lowered the cost of the computer to $1800.
This made me very upset because I paid 600 dollars more than what the computer was work.
When I went to the store to ask if they would make up the difference they flat out told me no.
This was very difficult for me as I am a student. They target students by advertising a student
discount on the price of the computer worth 10 % but then they lower the price a few months
later substantially more than the student discount so that the general public can buy their
computers. This a rip-off because they did not do anything illegal. They advertised a higher
price and simply lowered the price of the computer after two months. To appear more
legitimate for student they advertise back to school savings. The seller used email as a
marketing technique because I received an email regarding back to school savings. This way
they target students to advertise a superficial price that seems low when in reality it is high.
This scheme clearly targets students because it gives them an illusion that they are getting a
student discount. Microsoft store has complaints regarding how it leaks too much information
related to the customer. This may be how they are able to target students so easily. They can
take the age of the customer or see which school they go to and specifically target them with
superficial student deals.
