Rhetorical Analysis
It is thread that genetically modified food brings people tremendous changes and benefits
in agriculture industry, such as increasing grain yield and quality, improving the
environmental adaptability of crops. However, while people started to further understand the
genetically modified food, they started to worry about its potential risks, such as allegation
and damages on the environment. While the contributions the GMOs made are undeniable,
whether people can solve the potential dangers and how do people prevent and solve these
risks becomes controversial debates. Many agriculture scientists have given numerous
suggestions on improving and managing GMOs in the market. Two such scholars called
David Schubert and Anton E. Wohlers have done in-depth studies and written articles about
GM food labeling, which is an approach for helping the public to make food choices by
providing more information of GM food. Although two researchers started their studies from
different perspectives, both authors agree that GM food labeling is a recommended and
effective method to improve the governance and selection of GM food.
In the scholarly journal “Science Supports the Need for GM food Labeling” by Schubert
(2016), he stated that, “Evidence is mounting that some GM foods – and definitely the
herbicides associated with them – pose human health hazards” (p.6). However, a large
number of people preferred to choose GM food rather than normal goods. According to
Schubert (2016), “Most people would prefer to have foods containing genetically modified
products labeled because they want to know what they are eating is certainly valid” (p.6).

However, Schubert (2016) stated that, “anyone who claimed that the GM food are safe and
guaranteed that the technology is proven to be reliable and safe are “either naïve or
dishonest” (p.6). Moreover, Schubert (2016) showed the fact that “there is no required safety
testing for any of these novel food products, most people simply do not believe that the FDA
(Food and Drug Administration), mandated to protect our food supply, could be so
uninterested” (p.6). After illustrating the current issues of the GM food and relevant
department, Schubert (2016) presented the opinions of many other scientists who reckoned
that there is a scientific consensus that GM food are safe (p.7). The author affirmed some part
of the opinion and then claimed that “this claim is logically flawed” (Schubert, 2016, p.7). As
a result, Schubert believed that people should be able to distinguish different kind of GM
