Fredrick Douglas was an abolitionist leader. He was born into slavery and was
taught to read by his slave masters wife. Douglas became one of the most intellectuals
of his time. He advised presidents and lectured thousands on a variety of social
problems that occurred in that time including civil rights. In his speech “What to the
slave is the Fourth of July?” Douglas depicts the Fourth of July celebrating freedom and
