Review
Introduction:
The Tell-Tale Heart story was published in 1843 by Edgar Allan Poe. He was an American writer and
poet. He is one of the famous writers of the mid-nineteenth century. He is famous for his short stories and
poetry, especially for mystery and crime stories. Most of his work contains the events that happened
around him. The Tell-Tale Heart is a good short story.
Summary:
The Tell-Tale Heart short story revolves around an old man and his young servant (the narrator)
who irritates seeing the creepy eye of the old man. The narrator who is a young servant of the
old man before starting the story said that “he is nervous but not mad”. He says, “he is going to
tell a story in which he will defend his senses. He did this not for money or anything but, a fear
of the man’s creepy eye. Every night, he visits the old man’s apartment and secretly observed
him sleeping in the morning, he behaved as if everything was normal. After doing this for a
week, the narrator decides that this is the time to kill the old man.
Analysis:
The title of the story is very effective, it depicts the sound of the hearts of both the narrator and the old
man. The narrator tells in the story that the sound was coming from the heart of the old man under the
floor but it is not the correct assumption as the sound was coming from the heart of the narrator as he
was terrified due to the guilt of killing the old man. The hearts tell the tale of the feelings of the old man
and the narrator. Therefore, the title depicts the theme of the story.
The language used in this story is very simple and easily understandable for everyone. Even a
reader who is not good at English can understand this. Simple language is one of the main reasons I liked
this story.
This story is full of thrill and suspense. This is the feature I liked most about this story as I like
thrilling stories. Mostly writers lose their grip when it comes to the suspense but Poe managed it very
perfectly and I loved it.
The scenario is not explained nicely as we did not get whether the old man with a creepy eye and
