LITERATURE REVIEW AND RESEARCH QUESTION
Abstract
The objective of this research is to locate resources for family members of patients that have
been or are being neglected in nursing homes. Patients in nursing homes have the right to expect
services that will improve their health not make their health worse. Nursing home patients have
specific rights as well as protection that is provided to them under the law. When individuals
enter a nursing home, may it be for a short stay or a long stay, they have rights, and these rights
are explained to them as well as given to them in written form. It is expected that all patients that
must seek the services of nursing homes will be taken care of and their needs, may they be
medical or otherwise are seen too by the aides of the nursing home. Individuals are admitted to
nursing homes for all sorts of reasons, they can be admitted because of chronic diseases, slips
and falls that cause hip injuries, they are admitted if they have illnesses that family members
cannot attend to at home. Sometimes individuals are admitted to nursing homes after family
members have taken on the responsibility to care for them; however, they find themselves not
able to continue to give care. Nursing homes are supposed to be able to provide the necessary
care that these individuals need. In some nursing homes there is neglect, aides feel as though
they have too many patients that they are responsible for and they tend to not see to the needs of
all of their assigned patients. Nursing home aides not only neglect patients because of what they
suspect as being too much to handle, they also neglect patients for many other reasons. Aides
neglect patients because they do not have the necessary training, medication is given incorrectly,
personal needs are not seen too, and simple emotional needs are not attended to because of one
reason or another.

LITERATURE REVIEW AND RESEARCH QUESTION
Research Study Proposal- Part II: Literature Review and Research Question
The neglect of patients in nursing homes is all too common in many nursing homes, and
the nursing homes should be held accountable for the neglect of these patients. The research
question to be answered is: What are the resources available to families of neglected patients in
nursing homes? Nursing home patients die in nursing homes because of neglect due to hygiene,
emotional neglect, basic needs and medical neglect. Many families do not have or know how to
gain access to resources that can prevent and or help to stop the neglect of their family members
that must be committed to a nursing home.
According to “Medicare.gov,” patients that are admitted to nursing homes are given a a
written copy of their rights. Some of those rights are as follows:
1. Any individual that is admitted to a nursing home have the right to expect to be
