The title of this research paper is “THE EMPIRICAL STUDY ON ELECTRONIC
COMMERCE DIFFUSION IN THE MALAYSIAN SHIPPING INDUSTRY”€. Electronic
commerce (e “€“ commerce) refers to business transactions conducted over computer
networks. This research talks about how the electronic commerce helps in the efficient
functioning and processing of the Malaysian Shipping Industry. Electronic commerce has
definitely proved efficient in creating desired output with an ease and even in a blink of an
eye.
ABSTRACT
Electronic commerce refers to business transactions for both public and private. The
business transactions which are conducted over computer networks. It”€™s all about
electronic transactions among businesses, governments and consumers for the purpose of
information retrieval. Not only that, it also involves trading, procurement purchasing and
delivery of digitalized goods and services.
One of the main aspects of e “€“ commerce is ELECTRONIC DATA INTERCHANGE. It
is an important foundation block for the implementation of e business. Electronic Data
Interchange (EDI) refers to the structured transmission of data between organizations by
electronic means. It is used to transfer electronic documents from one computer system to
another, i.e. from one trading partner to another trading partner. To harness the capability
of EDI, Port Klang (Selangor, Malaysia), was facilitated with the national EDI under the
government”€™s trade facilitation programme. It is expected that the EDI will reap out
greater productivity and with greater efficiency. EDI will be able to respond and cater to
the needs and changing requirements of trade if a port is to become a major port of call all
over the world. The introduction of Electronic Data Interchange to the shipping industry in
the Port Klang area has been over a decade and has fetched substantial output. Now the
Malaysian government needs to understand the current EDI status essentially for the
success of any e commerce initiatives in Malaysia.
This study seeks to provide an empirical base on the electronic commerce diffusion in
MSI. According to this research it was found that in the Malaysian shipping industry, EDI
was primarily used in transactions with the customs department for duty payments and
import/export declaration it also indicates that Edi usage at port Klang might be high in
terms of volume however, its use was still very low and limited in terms of diversity,
breadth and depth. Only the customs department had transactions as transactions between
