calls for a 20% sugar beverages tax which supported by the Australian medical association, the
Australian Dental Association and the Public Health Association however there is a major push
back for the Australian Beverage Council. Geoff Parker the CEO of the Australian Beverage
Council believes that the government will continue to reject a sugar tax as they are looking at
the idea and evidence as to if a sugar tax would be beneficial and so far he does not believe
that the evidence supports the idea that the sugar tax will help decrease the obesity rate of
Australians.
A strategy that can be implemented is one that sees the sugar tax only being placed on
beverages with a sugar content over a certain number of grams. They should also ensure that
there is no sugar tax on any diet or non-sugar soft drinks even though they are manufactured
