For my reluctant reader assignment, I chose myself. When I was younger I was never
very good at reading. I frequently found myself at a lower reading level than my other classmates
which frustrated me and often drove me away from wanting to read. I also got driven away from
reading by the vast amount of academic reading, it felt forced and I think I just forgot that there
was literature out there I could read that I enjoyed. It wasn't till later in life that I came to the
realization of this. By then it seemed to late, I wasn’t sure what exactly I would enjoy to read nor
did I have the time outside of academic literature or school work to read for just the purpose of
pure enjoyment.
I am interested in somewhat depressing topics. Real life chaos/catastrophes or just
personal experiences in life in general are a few of the pics that peak my interest. I find it
interesting hearing about other lives, their experiences and trying to see the world from someone
else's eyes and perspective. I enjoy learning about others life choices and how they in turn
effected the course of their life.
My approximate reading level is about 10th- 12th grade I believe. So, I chose the book
“Go Ask Alice”. I found the book online as I was searching for books in the topics that interested
me. This one not only stood out to me as it was about a young girl’s harrowing descent into the
nightmarish world of drugs and bad decisions, but it was also written in diary form by the
teenager herself. Which one was super interesting to me as I had never read a book in that sort of
format before but two, was much easier to read.
As soon as I picked this book up I could not set it down. Each diary entry had me begging
for more! The format really helped too, it didn’t feel like a real book and like chapters were
dragging on. Instead it was daily entries that were full of unbelievable information that I couldn’t
stop. Highly recommend this book whether you are at a 9th-12th grade reading level or not. The
end will keep you guessing and wishing for more!
