Relaxation Practice
For my continued relaxation practice beyond the class, I plan on using a lot of
practices we learned in my daily life much more often. I have been able to construct
a plan in which I can use everyday to help bring more relaxation into my life.
I plan on doing a 45-minute to 1-hour daily routine for the next 3 months in
hopes of creating more relaxation for myself. I will start the relaxation practice once
I get home from football practice and after school everyday around 3 o’clock. I will
begin by taking my dog for a walk around the neighboring blocks by my house. On
this walk, I will use the technique of self-compassion to reflect on everything that I
have in my life and to be thankful. By doing this, it will allow me to be happy about
all the good things that I have in my life and not think about anything that is bad.
Next, when I return home I will start by using my foam roller and roll out all the
areas of my body in which are sore or tight. I will use this self-massage technique to
relieve those areas followed by stretching to further relax those muscles and my
body. This is something I have done everyday for the past 5 years while being in
college and being an athlete so I thoroughly believe that this does work in relaxing
my body. Next, I will tend to my parasympathetic nervous system by using the
technique of deep breathing to slow down my heart rate. I think that this will help
me relax and stop worrying about everything that I can’t control. I will focus on my
breath and when I start to wonder, come back to focusing solely on my deep
breaths. This is also related to the idea of mindfulness; by focusing on one thing (the
breath), relaxation goes to another level. I think those things for that practice of
