Reflective Cover Letter
The key thing I would like any reader of my portfolio to notice, particularly in relation
to this revised essay, is how I have attempted to take a seemingly specific and contained issue
– the way that general education is thought of and administered in America by policymakers,
educators, and students – and made connections to American identity itself, as well as the
economic implications of current educational policy. In researching and writing this essay,
and later revising and expanding it, it became apparent to me that what I saw initially as a
potentially abstract issue about the ideals of liberal arts education, in fact has a very real
