Reflection Paper: Woods Twilight

After visiting both metmuseum.org and moma.org and scanning through a plethora of
different artworks, I finally found the piece that interested me the most: Woods Twilight.
Woods Twilight is a photo taken by Edward J. Steichen and it was taken in 1899. The
medium used in this piece of art is platinum print. Steichen is an artist born in
Luxembourg who became an American citizen and then lived in West Redding,
Connecticut.
After finding this piece of art, I instantly looked up more of Edward J. Steichen’s
photographs to see what other works of art he took. This photo was intriguing to me for
several different reasons. The first being that I am very interested in horror films and
especially horror films that take place in the woods and that is what I thought of
immediately after looking at this photograph. The way that the trees stand tall and are
naked with a heavy fog in the distance, making it difficult to see more than ten feet in front
of you caught my interest tremendously. Another reason is because I am a very outdoorsy
person. I am interested in artworks in the form of painting, however, nature based
photographs always seem to catch my attention easier so that is probably why Woods
Twilight stood out to me.
When looking at this photograph, on the surface it looks like it is very simple. However,
