Reflection and Evaluation: “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid
Annotating takes much longer and is tedious in my opinion. However, I learned
more from annotating “Girl” (Kincaid 355) in Literature: A Portable anthology than I would
have if I did not annotate it. I found it frustrating how much of my patience was involved
while annotating this story though because I found the literary piece to be offensive. The
derogatory language and use of the word slut was very off-putting to me. Simply put, I have
no interest in reading about people being labeled as sluts. Additionally, I am not good at
comprehending reading material in general because I am ADD, so I found it difficult to
focus so long on such a short story. Things that I am actually interested in reading give me
fewer issues with focusing on the act of reading the text because the literature manages to
