Chapter 6: Classic Therapy
By far, this was the most interesting chapter because it provided great insight into different
topics. The author provided a great deal of techniques that can be used with different populations.
This chapter allowed me to gain some insight as how a novice therapist may be able to redirect the
session or find purpose. It also provided information as to how to deal with a person dealing with
suicidal ideation.
The author provided techniques that would be easy to expand my knowledge on and use
early on in my career. Not only am I able to find techniques that can be useful to a novice but also,
provides information as to why it is useful to use with each client. This chapter is relevant to my
field because it ties in prior chapters to classic therapy techniques. I can become familiarized with
how clients may react by using the techniques described in this chapter.
The entire chapter was useful because it provided a good amount of techniques that can be
used with multiple populations. One of the techniques described in the chapter that I found useful
specially the explanation was ABC Model of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. This technique
is useful when trying to allow the client to see that their logic is faulty. The counselor must help
the client view the event as is and realize that the view of the event is what causes the reaction
rather than the event itself. The model is simple enough to explain to a client when trying to change
the client’s reaction to a certain event, and eventually assist the client in changing the consequence
