Diversity in The Workplace

In Women & Men in Management, Powell describes many situations in the
workplace where our biases and stereotypes play a role. I have realized, through this
reading that there are stereotypes that are subliminally part of my own life, that certainly
do alter my way of thinking or my choices when searching for work. What struck me as
most representative of my own views is found in chapter 5 where Powell discusses self-
selection decisions, and how sex differences play into our decision making.
Self-selection decisions are based on individuals choosing job opportunities
which “fit or match” and have been found are different between men and women.
(Powell, 2011, p. 75) While this idea can be reinforced by Powell’s earlier description of
