REFERRAL SERVICES IN GUIDANCE AND
COUNSELLING
MEANING AND REASONS FOR
REFERRAL
•Referral in Guidance and Counselling means transferring a client
to another counselor or agency for further assistance or specialized
help.
•Counselors are not all knowing. They cannot handle all manner of
problems individuals bring to them, some are beyond their
competence and scope of services rendered.
•A referral for counseling should be considered when
you believe a student’s problems go beyond your own
experience and expertise, or when you feel
uncomfortable helping a student with some issue.
REASONS FOR REFERRAL

•A referral may be made either because of the way
the student’s problems are interfering with his or her
academic work or with your teaching, or because
observation of the student’s personal behavior raises
concerns apart from his or her academic work.
•There are other cases that are referred to
agencies that o1er 2nancial assistance
which a counselor cannot o1er.
