I think reading the book Alice in Wonderland brought about two very good points of what
an adolescent have to go through. One point was about image, it may look as if they are
becoming an adult but, what their mental state is still somewhat of a child. The other point
was adolescent was in this in between state where they are carefree and living simple lives
and that their mentality is a type of carnivalesque reality.
In my younger years, around the teen years I was told that I would need to have taken
responsibilities as an adult. Some examples were to get a job. Yes I have started working
when I was sixteen. Some of the responsibilities I was pushed on were to help pay bills or
expenses of the household. I was not too happy about that yet I did was told. Alice
remarked “Be what you would seem to be’… ‘Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise
than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not
otherwise than what had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.’” I think this
would resemble what I felt at that time.
The second point was a realization of Alice just awakening from her sleeping state. She
noticed that her younger sister was by her side and she had come to a conclusion that her
younger years were carefree and simple. This is true for most adolescent. It was also true
that we had a total different viewpoint when we were younger, as the term comes to play,
carnivalesque. We all at one had some sort of dysfunctional reality, sort of the opposite of a
normal society, visions it being upside down in a sense.
