Psychology of Reading Reading: Window of Opportunity
As a child, I have been so infatuated with reading materials, be it magazines, newspapers,
and novels. However, as a reader and a teacher, it is also a dream that this hobby radiates to my
students that they may love reading like I do. It breaks my heart that instead of reading, children
opted to stay at home spending their leisure time watching animated films which somewhat irks
me. Hence as a teacher it is a breakthrough encouraging children to invest in reading over a lot of
interests that the world could offer.
Personally, I think reading was an innate capability of a person—as he/she ages he/she
could eventually acquire the reading skill. However, during our discussions I learned that reading
is a cognitive process and is developmental. In its very sense, reading then should be thought in
formal instruction for it enhances and enriches children’s cognitive aspects. Regardless of its
operational definition I came to realize that reading is a window of opportunity, that through
reading, we could explore the world, we could tolerate diversity, we could understand cultural
differences, thus reading plays a very vital role in globalization for it could connect us and make
us one. As a language teacher, I will devote myself in encouraging students to love reading for
through it they could gain wisdom and be well-bred.
On the other hand, I have understood that reading and writing are interrelated, even history
proved that since then the development of both skills are from one grass roots. This only shows
that all macro-skills are connected; and in teaching and testing the language each of the suggested
