Unit 2 Reader Response
One of the main themes from the reading, “Next Door Monsters” in Natural Born Celebrities was
how true crime authors and journalists chose how to portray the similarities or differences between the
common public and the “monstrous serial killer.” I found one quote from the chapter to be particularly
troubling “Donald Sears, for example, comments that ‘perhaps the most frightening characteristic of the
serial killer is that he usually presents to the public the image of the all-American boy, the nice man next
door, or the shy, quiet neighbor down the street’. Sears goes on to reassure his reader that the killer’s
apparent normality is false.”

I didn’t find this quote troubling because it sounds hokey or provocative
