In the 19th century, countries which did not belong to the western region like china, japan,
Russia and the middle east were greatly feeling the impact of modernization and
industrialization from the western countries. During this period of 1750– 1919 these countries
experiences the pressure despite that japan was quite successful in attaining the
industrialization level through the Meiji Restoration. Concerning china’s case, it had no clue
and never understood the essence of to modernize and industrialized which led to its lagging
behind in economy. After feeling the impact of imperialism, the two countries reacted
differently towards the western encroachment. But how could these two counties with great
similarities end up reacting so differently? This paper will therefore argue what were the main
responses of the two countries towards the western imperialism.
