As far as quantitative analysis through modeling used by my organization, we utilize each of the
model types described in the text, i.e., iconic, analog and mathematical. What follows are
examples of how my organization uses each of these models.
The organization I currently work for is the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC).
The first model that I’d like to take a look at is the iconic model. This modeling technique is
somewhat less used than the others, but still has its uses in technology demonstration and
spatial relationships between certain systems and components. In many cases ‘virtual’ iconic
modeling (e.g., 3D modeling), is used, especially in the earliest stages of development before
formalizing the decision to fully pursue acquisition of new weapon system.
The next model mentioned by the text is an analog model. This type of model can be any of
several instruments that report information that is collected by sensors. When deployed,
satellites are equipped with sensors that collect several types of data. This data usually
represents phenomena occurring on the ground—infrared signatures, temperatures,
meteorological events, and others that I’d rather not go into here. Like I stated earlier, this data
is displayed on the instruments that the satellite operators observe as part of their mission.
The text breaks down mathematical models into two categories i.e., deterministic and
stochastic/probabilistic. The mathematical model is perhaps the most commonly used model
that I interact with on a daily basis. Of these models, Operational Availability (AO) is the one I
use most frequently. Operational Availability is the quotient of Mean Time Between Failure
(MTBF) divided by the MTBF plus the Mean Down Time (MDT). This is a probabilistic model that
uses current and historical data to predict the amount of time a system should be available for
operational use. Each of these types of models plays an important part in the mission of SMC.
