The Purpose of FYS Essay

We have started class but have not really talked much about the purpose of FYS aside
from the general information on the syllabus. This paper will help us start to figure
out the purpose of FYS. For this paper, students will answer the following questions:
1. What do you think is the purpose of FYS?
– I think that the purpose of FYS is to equip all freshmen with the knowledge and
information that they need to be proficient college students. I believe that as a
first year seminar, FYS will extend knowledge to students that will extend well
past the first year of college. We should be given information and advice that will
help to guide us as students through all of our years here at Marshall University.
2. Why do you think Marshall requires all students to take FYS?
– In my opinion, Marshall University requires all students to take FYS in attempt to
equip students with skills that will help them to better succeed throughout
college. Also given the fact that many students drop out of college after their
first year, I believe that Marshall has implemented a mandatory first year
seminar to cut back on as many dropouts as possible. Many situations that make
